Samira and Justine’s paper, “Direct Analysis in Real Time-Mass Spectrometry and Kohonen Artificial Neural Networks for Species Identification of Larva, Pupa and Adult Life Stages of Carrion Insects” was accepted by Analytical Chemistry.

In an article by Biocompare talking about advancements in mass spectrometry imaging , Dr. Chip Cody of JEOL discusses his excitement about our newly-developed technique, Laser-Ablation DART Imaging Mass Spectrometry (LADI-MS). He talks about Kristen's research, in collaboration with Dr. Ed Espinoza from U.S. Fish and Wildlife Forensic Lab, regarding the imaging and mapping of ion spatial distributions in endangered wood species. Professor Musah, Justine, and Kristen traveled to San Diego, CA to present at the 66th Annual Meeting for the American Society for Mass Spectrometry. Kristen presented a talk titled “LADI of the Wood: Imaging of Small-Molecule Spatial Distributions in Endangered Wood Species by a Novel Ambient Ionization Imaging Technique”. Professor Musah and Justine presented posters titled “Knot What You Think: Species Identification of Illegally-traded Woods by Direct Analysis in Real Time-High Resolution Mass Spectrometry” and “The Time He Dies as Told by Flies: Identification of Necrophagous Insects by DART-HRMS for Post Mortem Interval Estimation” respectively.

Meghan and Megan went to the Multidisciplinary Approaches to Forensic Investigations Symposium at Boston University in Boston, MA. Meghan presented a poster titled “SPME-facilitated Direct Analysis in Real Time Mass Spectrometric Analysis of Plant-based Legal Highs for the Development of a Headspace Database”.

Allix graduated from the University at Albany Summa Cum Laude with a double major in Chemistry and Mathematics as well as a minor in Business. She was the Commencement Speaker for the Science and Mathematics Graduation and will be continuing her PhD studies in the Musah Lab. Congratulations Allix!
Allix graduated from the Honors College. Her thesis was titled “Forensic Identification of Condom Lubricants by Advanced Statistical Analysis Processing of Direct Analysis in Real Time Mass Spectrometric Data – Towards Development of a Condom Residue Database for Forensic Science Practitioners”.
